Remembering Mill Creek: When We Were There

In 1959, nearly 20,000 African American St. Louisans were displaced with the demolition of the Mill Creek Valley by federal urban renewal policies. Join us for the showing of this new documentary and conversation with author Vivian Gibson.

Located in the central corridor of downtown St. Louis, Mill Creek was considered a slum but, in fact, it was a vital area with hundreds of thriving businesses and institutions that served the neighboring community. Nearly 70 years later, the residents who once lived in the segregated community share their stories and reflect on their lives within the once vibrant, close-knit Black community revealing their resilience as children who witnessed the decline and eventual erasure of their neighborhood.
