Eliot Chapel mourns the loss of longtime member and beloved friend, Luis E. Ortiz, who passed away on May 5, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born in Puerto Rico on February 7, 1949, Luis brought warmth, joy, and a generous spirit to every community he touched.

For 45 years, he made his home in Kirkwood, Missouri, where he became a dedicated and active member of Eliot Chapel. Luis served the congregation in many ways, including as chairman of the board, offering steady leadership, deep commitment, and a welcoming presence to all.

Some of the most cherished memories of Luis are rooted at Bergfried. There, during semi-annual campouts amid campfires, Luis was in his element. He could often be found sitting by the fire with his guitar, creating playful, improvised songs that brought laughter to children and adults alike. He delighted in cooking for others, frequently preparing large pots of his Puerto Rican rice and beans over the fire and inviting everyone to share in the meal. These moments embodied Luis’s generous heart and his gift for bringing people together.

Beyond Eliot, Luis was also committed to service in the broader community, including his time as president of the Webster Groves Rotary, active participation in the Puerto Rican Society, Latin American Society, and he worked for the Minority Business Council.

He enjoyed tending to his garden and was a devoted fan of the Illinois Illini, enthusiastically cheering on both basketball and football.

Above all, Luis treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sally; his daughters, Sara Sexton (spouse, Kevin) and Diana Toji (spouse, Jason); his brother Alfred, Sister Sandra; and a large extended family. His four grandchildren were the light of his life and a constant source of happiness and pride.

A memorial service is being planned at Eliot Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Luis will be remembered for his kindness, his leadership, his joyful presence, and the many ways he strengthened this community. He will be deeply missed.
