Did You Know? The Green Card Isn't Green!
The Immigration Justice Team is sponsoring Eliot Chapel's summer read: America, Let Me In: A Choose Your Immigration Story by Felipe Torres Medina. The author, an immigrant from Colombia, earned five Emmy nominations for his writing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In this witty and insightful book, he uses humor to explain the often bewildering pathways to immigrating to the United States.
Among the many surprising facts you'll learn is that a "green card" isn't actually green – it's aquamarine with dashes of red and blue! A green card grants permanent resident status, making it more powerful than a visa but not as powerful as U.S. citizenship. Permanent residents can live and work in the United States indefinitely and must pay taxes, but they cannot vote in federal elections.
Whether you're curious about the U.S. immigration system or simply looking for a thought-provoking read, we hope you'll pick up the book and then join the conversation in the fall: Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm or Sunday, September 27, at 12:30 pm.
