Designs for an Electronic Sign at Eliot Chapel

We have exciting news to share! Eliot Chapel is planning to replace our current sign in the front of the chapel with an electronic sign over the summer. This installation is being funded by a generous gift from an Eliot congregant who wishes to remain anonymous.

There are many benefits to transitioning to an electronic sign:

  • The sign can be easily updated remotely (the current sign requires staff and volunteers to manually update it).
  • The sign will be more legible to passing vehicles and community members in the area.
  • Given the location of the sign at the busy intersection of Taylor and Argonne and across the street from the Kirkwood Farmers' Market, Eliot will be able to more effectively reach a wider audience with communications related to Sunday services, social justice initiatives, Eliot-sponsored concerts and events, and information about Unitarian Universalism. All of which could potentially increase our attendance on Sundays and our membership down the road.
  • We will be able to incorporate images onto the sign with our communications.
  • With our current sign we are only able to have one static communication displayed, and the electronic sign is dynamic, allowing us to rotate multiple communications on any given day.

Debby Lovell, Eliot’s Administrative/Communications Assistant, has created a couple of designs that Rev. Krista has approved:

Please note that our aim with the designs was to have the sign gracefully blend in with the existing landscape and to not overshadow the architecture of the Chapel in the background. We also want to emphasize that we do not intend to have rapidly flashing lights on the sign that would cause an annoying disturbance to the community. Finally, these signs are easily adjusted should the congregation vote on May 18 to change our name to Eliot Unitarian Universalist Chapel.

We would like to hear your feedback on what design we should move forward with! Please submit your vote via this online form or alternatively on Sunday, May 11 in Adams Hall where there will be a station set up for congregants to submit their vote. Only one vote per congregant will be counted. If a congregant submits more than one vote, the first vote submitted will be counted. The winning design will be announced within the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you have any additional feedback or questions, please feel free to reach out to Brian Franklin at admin@eliotchapel.org.
